«Party (Le Parti) a été conçu par Cristina De Middel, après un premier voyage en Chine en 2012. Son but : capter, avec son appareil photo, ce qui retient son attention, sans aucune tentative d’explication ou d’analyse. Elle est revenue avec une grande série des photographies difficiles à classifier et éditer puisque leur seul dénominateur commun était son propre étonnement. Party est un livre de photo construit sur la base du Petit Livre rouge de Mao Zedong, un livre qui fut « la Bible » des Chinois.
Cristina De Middel utilise la forme et le texte en grande partie caviardé de ce livre pour faire émerger de « nouvelles » citations qui, avec les photographies recto-verso glissées entre les pages, créent un récit particulier.
Comme le Petit Livre rouge, la matérialité du livre (couverture plastique un peu granuleuse, papier très fin) fait penser à un missel ou, pour les Parisiens, à un plan de métro.
Ainsi que Cristina De Middel elle-même l’a déclaré : « J’ai décidé d’adapter cette déclaration politique historique aux temps modernes en censurant et cachant les parties du texte qui ne sont plus pertinentes et en mettant en évidence quelques autres phrases recomposées qui, pour moi, forment un portrait plus précis de la République Populaire de Chine au vingtième et unième siècle. »»
