La monographie rétrospective que lui consacre Gilles Mora (plus de 150 images reproduites en duotone) aborde l'activité photographique de Denis Roche en privilégiant justement la dimension temporelle de son travail - que ce dernier a souvent commentée lui-même, des Dépôts de savoir et de technique, en 1980, au Boîtier de mélancolie, en 1998. Elle en souligne aujourd'hui l'importance esthétique, à travers une série d'enjeux que Denis Roche a si bien mis en relation entre ses livres d'écrivain, d'une part, et ses expositions de photographe, d'autre part, lui qui a été le premier à ne jamais refuser à l'art photographique sa composante expressément littéraire.
