À chaque situation de crise, les principales victimes sont les enfants. Physiquement fragiles, ils sont souvent les premiers à succomber à la faim, la maladie et la déshydratation. Impuissants devant les rouages du monde et ses défaillances, ils ne peuvent comprendre l’origine du danger, les raisons pour lesquelles certains leur veulent du mal ou les causes de leur fuite, parfois si brutale, et pourquoi ils doivent laisser derrière eux leur école, leurs amis et leur foyer.
Dans ce recueil complémentaire à Exodus, Sebastião Salgado dévoile 90 portraits de très jeunes exilés, migrants et réfugiés. Ses sujets sont issus de différents pays, victimes de crises diverses, mais un point commun les unit: tous sont en exil, tous ont moins de 15 ans. Dans ce vaste projet sur les réfugiés, ce qui a frappé Salgado face à ces garçons et ces fillettes ne fut pas tant leur innocence muette face à leurs souffrances que leurs ressources inépuisables en énergie et en enthousiasme, y compris dans les situations les plus désespérées. Des réfugiés sur le bord des routes en Angola et au Burundi aux bidonvilles du Brésil et aux camps tentaculaires au Liban et en Irak, les enfants n’en demeurent pas moins des enfants: aussi prompts à rire aux éclats qu’à fondre en larmes, jouer au football, patauger dans l’eau sale, échafauder mille bêtises entre amis, le plus souvent ravis d’être photographiés.
